People have been obsessed with
losing weight and have spent billions of dollars on diet
aids and self help materials. Some of the methods are
ludicrous as well as ineffective. A common sense approach
is much more effective for long term success. Tips for
losing weight should make sense for the long haul, not
for short term results.
Some of the most outrageous methods for weight loss include
inflatable rubber suits sold in the 1970’s. People
were to put the suit on, pump air into it, and then exercise
and do house work to miraculously shed unwanted pounds.
The actual results were closer to skin irritation and
being sweaty and uncomfortable without losing weight.
Other methods included crazy fad diets. Did anyone else
try the horrible diet that had you eat six eggs the first
day, six hot dogs the second day, and six bananas the
third day? This diet was supposed to help you lose five
pounds. Even if you lost weight due to water weight, it
was promptly gained again when a normal diet was resumed.
The following life style changes can lead to permanent
weight loss:
1. Eat the Colors of the Rainbow
By eating many colored fruits and vegetables, you provide
your body with a wide range of nutrients and antioxidants.
Not only will this give you energy, but provide fiber
that will fill you up. Imagine how much nicer a boring
salad would be when adding color and flavor with fresh
herbs, bright tomatoes, sweet peppers, and more of your
favorite vegetables. The colors and textures will appeal
to all of your sense and provide your body with the foods
it needs to be healthy while losing weight.
2. Move Your Body
An exercise programme is essential for maintaining weight
loss, but small changes in movement can help, too. For
example, park further from the door at the store and enjoy
the walk. Get up from your desk several times a day and
walk around the office. Many buildings have stairs and
you can take some time during a coffee break doing a lap
or two on the stairs. Who needs a stair machine? Look
for ways to move a little more. You will look and feel
better.
3. Drink Water
Your body needs plenty of water to function properly and
to flush the system. This is especially important when
you are losing weight. If you do not like water, consider
drinking a sparkling water with fresh lemon or lime. Avoid
caffeinated beverages and understand the amount of calories
you are consuming in sodas, juices, and lattes. Just because
you do not chew something does not mean that the calories
do not count.

4. Find Support
Any life style change takes commitment and perseverance. Find
a support network of people who understand. When that evening
snack is calling your name, you can pick up the phone and talk
to a friend instead.
5. Be Cautious When Eating Out
It can be tricky to eat out and choose the healthy items on
the menu. For example, some vegetable dishes in Chinese restaurants
are smothered in high calorie sauces. You may think you are
‘being good’ by ordering the tofu and veggie dish,
but the amount of calories you will consume may surprise you.
One option is to get the sauce on the side and add a small amount
to steamed vegetables. The flavor is still there, but your food
is not swimming in sauce.
6. Find Snacks that Work for You
Have you ever tried to lose weight on food that you hate? It
just does not last. Find snacks that are low in calories, but
good for you. For example, you may hate rice cakes but like
bread. Instead of eating the white breads that go through your
system quickly, couple some great whole grain bread with a bit
of protein. This combination of complex carbohydrates and protein
will take the edge off of your hunger for a longer time and
you may actually enjoy eating it.
7. It Starts in the Grocery Store
Buy healthy foods that are easy to prepare and snack on. If
you buy cookies and ice cream in the grocery store, don’t
expect to stay away from them at home. It is easy to think we
need to keep these items in the house for the children, but
do they really need it? They would be much better off learning
healthy habits at an early age. Consider baking whole grain
chocolate cupcakes with them if you want to give them a treat.
Kids love eating foods they have helped to create.
Tips for losing weight are all over the web. The important thing
is to find the little tricks that fit your individual lifestyle
and personality. Losing weight is a marathon race, not a sprint.
Take your time and develop new habits that will stay with you
for years to come.
