Liposuction is a very effective
way to get rid of pockets of fat, but is it right for
you? There are many factors to consider when considering
liposuction. By understanding how it works and what the
risks are, you will be better able to make a good decision.
Liposuction removes fat surgically by sucking it out through
a tube. There are different techniques that can effectively
target problem areas and take the stubborn fat out. It
is important to remember that liposuction is not a method
of weight loss, but a way to get rid of localized fat.
If you get liposuction to lose weight, but do not change
your dietary and exercise habits, you will gain the weight
back. Unfortunately, you will have no idea where the weight
will be distributed. When fat cells are removed, a body
will find other fat cells in which to store excess energy
and fat. If fat cells are removed from the thighs and
buttocks, the fat may end up in the calves, on the arms,
or in the abdomen. It is important to see liposuction
as a way to redistribute fat, not to lose fat.
The best candidates for liposuction are people of good
health who have already reached or gotten close to their
ideal weight, but have pockets of stubborn fat that need
to be removed. For example, if you have weight in the
abdomen left over from pregnancy, you may not be able
to exercise and diet it away. Other areas where diet and
exercise are ineffective include the pads of fat on the
hips and fat that collects on the sides of the knees.
In other words, when a healthy body at a normal weight
is out of proportion, liposuction may be a good solution.
There are several types of liposuction including the traditional
method, hydroliposculpture, generations I and II of ultrasonic
liposuction, and generation III of ultrasonic liposuction.
As the techniques have improved, the safety has improved
significantly and the side effects have been much better.
Recuperation times can range from days to weeks depending
on the procedure and the individual patient. It is important
to recognize that any surgical procedure carries the risk
of complications and even death. The recent death of Kanye
West’s mother has put the dangers of elective surgery
back in the spotlight.

Some medical professionals argue that
the risks of liposuction for the removal of abdominal fat in
people with type 2 diabetes are outweighed by the health benefits.
Some physicians believe that this is a viable way to remove
the dangerous abdominal fat so that diabetes patients can achieve
control of their blood sugar. Since the effects of poor blood
sugar control are so destructive, many doctors think that the
risks associated with liposuction are negligible in comparison.
Liposuction may be an in office procedure with fast recuperation
times, but it is still a surgical procedure with the accompanying
risks. It is not a substitute for a healthy diet and exercise,
but can aid some people in achieving the figure they want.
