There is a wide range of diet pills that do everything from suppressing the appetite to blocking the digestion of fat. Many of these pills are available over the counter or through online marketing. It is important to look at the pros and cons of using these products and weigh the risk of using pills with possible side effects against the health risks associated with being over weight.

Appetite suppressants include bitter orange, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), country mallow (heartleaf), Ephedra, and Hoodia. Bitter orange and country mallow are dietary supplement that functions in a similar way to Ephedra. All three of these supplements can suppress the appetite, but are linked with serious side effects including high blood pressure, heart rate irregularities, heart attacks, stroke, seizures, and death. CLA is used to decrease appetite and body fat while building muscle. The side effects may include gastrointestinal complaints, such as diarrhea. Hoodia has not been proven to be effective or to have negative side effects. It is used to decrease the appetite.

Another function of diet pills is as fat binding agents. These chemicals bind to fats and cause them to pass through the digestive tract without absorption. Chitosan has not been proven to be effective, but many people feel that it has been helpful in their attempts at weight loss. It is not uncommon for people to experience gastrointestinal problems such as bloating, constipation, and other digestive problems. Guar gum also blocks fat, but it is also noted for the ability to give a feeling of fullness. It is known to cause digestive complaints, including diarrhea.

Xenical is a prescription medication prescribed for obesity. It is normally prescribed to people who are at significant risk of health problems because of their weight. The medication should only be taken under the supervision of a doctor. Side effects can include gastrointestinal complaints, such as unusual bowel movements. The medication uses enzymes to block fat, causing fat to pass through the body. A low fat diet is recommended for people using Xenical to reduce side effects.
Alli is another drug that was prescribed. There is another non-prescription strength version available over the counter. The pill is designed to prevent fat absorption for approximately a quarter of the fat consumed. The instructions that come with this pill recommend a low fat diet and fitness programme to make the pill effective.

Fat binding agents should be used with caution and under the supervision of a doctor. They tend to produce gastrointestinal side effects, such as constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, and bloating. If you have tried diet and exercise, and feel that you need some extra help, discuss the use of diet pills with your doctor and find out if this is a good option for you. Your doctor can review your health history and your family history and determine if you are a good candidate for the use of diet pills.
