Cellulite is hated by women the world over. It is a fat that gives skin a dimpled or bumpy appearance. People spend billions of dollars trying to treat this condition, and many of those dollars are wasted on products that do not work. In order to decide how to approach the problem of cellulite, we will look at what it is and what can be done about it.

Cellulite is generally found on women’s thighs, hips, and buttocks, although it can present in other areas, such as the arms and breasts. It is caused by fat that is found between the skin and muscle. There are fibrous cords connecting the skin to the muscle. When the fat cells expand under the skin, they are allowed to push against the skin, except where the fibrous cords are present. The constriction of the cords coupled with the fat cells pressing against the skin cause the irregular, or ‘dimpled’, appearance of the skin.

Because women tend to have more fat in the thighs and buttocks, they are more likely to have cellulite. Older women may see more cellulite because skin becomes less elastic, giving the cellulite a more obvious appearance. Other factors that affect the development of cellulite and its severity include genetic predisposition, lack of exercise, stress, and hormones.

You cannot do anything about your genetic tendency toward cellulite. Hormones that affect cellulite include insulin, thyroid hormones, prolactin, and estrogen. Keeping your hormones in balance and avoiding birth control pills that encourage cellulite production can help keep them at bay. However, your biggest tool for fighting cellulite is diet and exercise. A healthy diet and active lifestyle with regular exercise can reduce the look of cellulite.

There are many creams and lotions marketed to women for the reduction of cellulite. These products are generally very expensive and there is no proof that they work. There are also supplements that are not known to be effective. Do not drain your budget purchasing products that have not been proven to work. By changing your life style, you should see an improvement in your cellulite.

Reducing stress can help fight cellulite better than expensive beauty products. Since hormonal imbalances and an overproduction of stress hormones accelerate cellulite production, keeping your stress levels down can be the best beauty treatment. Not only can exercise help reduce the production of fat that accumulates under the skin, but it reduces stress and anxiety. The production of endorphins as a result of exercise also helps to keep stress under control. It is important to make regular aerobic exercise part of your daily routine.

Choosing an exercise programme that works well with your schedule and temperament is very important. For example, a working mother may not have time to go to the gym after work, but can go for a walk during her lunch hour in a nearby park or shopping center. Perhaps she can even find a walking buddy to go with her. On the other hand, a single person may be able to make working out in a gym part of an active social life by meeting friends and playing basketball or lifting weights together. Other people may prefer to relax and walk on a treadmill while watching their favorite television programme or listening to music. Do not feel that your work out has to meet someone else’s expectations. Do what works for you so that you can make it last. Also, be aware that mixing it up can keep you motivated and help your body to burn more fat. If you like to work out at home, try using the treadmill one day and an exercise DVD another day. In this way you will not get bored and your body will work different muscles.

Some great news about cellulite is that it does not hurt you. Even if you are unhappy with the look of it, it does not carry a health risk. While struggling to look better, you don’t have to worry about additional health risks.
