Appetite suppressants became popular as a method of losing weight in the late 1940’s. At this time, many people believed that this would be the end of weight problems. As it turns out, there is no magic pill to take that will make people lose weight. While appetite suppressants used in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise may help an individual to over come bad eating habits initially, they can not be viewed as a solution to obesity or a way for everyone to become thin.
Use great caution if you decide to try a diet pill or appetite suppressant. Many dietary supplements are not required to get approval from government agencies to assure that they are safe and uniformly produced. Unlike other drugs, many appetite suppressants are sold as supplements, putting them in a different legal category. Even approved drugs can have adverse side affects and may be dangerous for some individuals.

One appetite suppressant that has received a great deal of attention is hoodia. The clinical trials on hoodia do not prove its usefulness as an appetite suppressant and there have not been enough tests to show how safe it is. On the other hand, there are many individuals who have had great results with this supplement and feel that they have found a safe and natural way to curb their appetites.

There are other appetite suppressants and diet pills that work by increasing the heart rate and affecting the blood vessels. These supplements have been used by many people without problems, but there have been cases of liver problems and even death. Kava, germander and bitter orange are under investigation and may or may not have side effects that could be harmful. If you are at risk for heart or liver problems or have a family history of these issues, use extreme caution and discuss the use of supplements with your doctor.

Even if you choose to use an appetite suppressant, remember that it is a short term tool for changing habits. Long term success is dependent on diet and exercise. You run much less risk of side effects if you use natural means of increasing the metabolism and suppressing the appetite. By eating foods high in fiber, you will have a sense of fullness for longer and will not need to eat as much. Increasing your energy levels with exercise will keep you from turning to an afternoon candy bar for a boost of energy. Another good way to avoid that late afternoon snack or evening binge is to eat protein and complex carbohydrates throughout the day. Also, consider keeping a healthy snack on hand. If you hate rice cakes and carrot sticks, find an alternative to ‘traditional’ diet food that appeals to you. For example, some people like spicy dried fish, or whole grain bread with a small amount of natural peanut butter. Trying to cut back too far in your caloric intake will back fire.

Appetite suppressants may give short term success, and that can be helpful to get you started. Long term results come with a change of lifestyle and a different way of looking at food. Use common sense and caution when using any dietary supplement and weigh the risk of being overweight with the risk of side effects from appetite suppressants.
