What has successful weight loss
got to do with sun bathing?
That seems a strange title doesn’t it. What
has weight loss got to do with sun bathing? Well the answer
to that is obviously- absolutely nothing, and then again
at the same time absolutely something.
Before you think that this author has totally lost his
marbles lets first of all take a look at weight loss and
sunbathing. At first glance there can be no possible connection.
Lying out in the sun is not going to help you slim down
to a supermodel size. Unless of course you simply dehydrate,
which would result in some weight loss I suppose, but
also a very shrivelled body, so that’s no good.
Suppose instead of sunbathing the title of the article
was “What has successful weight loss got to do with
intense mental pressure”, like exams for example.
So what is the connection? Well intense mental pressure
and sunbathing can only be tolerated for short periods
of time before something goes horribly wrong.
In the case of sun bathing if you’re not careful
you will burn, in the case of intense mental pressure
then there is the capacity for a nervous breakdown. Both
of these are stressors on the body. Now stressors can
be harmful, or they can be developmental. We need a certain
amount of stress to develop but it needs to be controlled.
Large amounts of stress can have harmful effects whilst
small amounts can be beneficial.
But stress can do other things. Chronic low level stress
can cause the release of stress hormones which amongst
other things encourage our bodies to pile on excess weight
around the abdomen. Drinks, especially those rich in caffeine
stimulate the release of these hormones adding to the
problem.
So what has this got to do with weight loss? Well those
of you who have tried to lose weight before will know.
It is very stressful. Just to mention a few symptoms;
lethargy, hunger pangs, food cravings, feelings of guilt.Usually
the stress becomes too much and some form of food binging
takes over, and the weight loss effort collapses.
Often there are
a couple more attempts to get going but inevitable a sense
of hopelessness prevails and the stress of it all wins.
If this has happened to you don’t blame yourself.
You were in effect swimming against the tide and without
a protocol to deal with it, it could only be a matter
of time before you gave up.
