Almost everyone puts on a pound
or two during the holidays. It is hard to resist Grandma’s
sugar cookies or Aunt Sue’s sugary tart. Every culture
associates certain foods with their holidays and it is
inherent in our nature to indulge in these time honored
traditions. Meanwhile, it can completely derail your plan
to stay healthy and lose weight. A few weight loss tricks
may help you to come through the holiday season virtually
unscathed.
Holiday weight gain is not restricted to the major holidays,
either. Have you ever been part of a wedding party where
food and drink was available for weeks at a time as you
attended showers, parties, and the reception itself? Perhaps
your holiday binge is centered on Valentines Day and the
traditional candies and liqueurs given as gifts. Do you
see the trend here? Holiday eating can crop up every few
months and give you a supposed excuse to over eat.
The following diet and exercise tricks may help:
• Decrease Your Appetite Before a Party
How many times have we given in to mother’s advice
not to spoil our appetites? As children, we were told
not to ruin our dinners with snacks. This is great advice
for children who might try to eat a cookie before a healthy
dinner. However, as adults heading for a party, decreasing
the appetite is a healthy choice. For example, if you
are headed for a party where high calorie appetizers,
sugary punch, high calorie alcoholic drinks, and a dinner
that may very well be filled with fat and calories followed
by a rich dessert; consider eating a cup of light soup,
crudités, or an apple before heading out the door.
A large glass of water may also help curb your appetite
and thirst, helping you to enjoy the taste of the food
at the party, but keeping you from over indulging.
• Talk, Live, and Enjoy!
Don’t hide behind your plate and cup. Remember that
the real fun of a holiday celebration is the interaction
with other people. If you are not an outgoing person,
you can still focus on the other people in the room instead
of the buffet table.
• Choose Carefully
If you see a buffet filled with lovely food, you can taste
it all without gaining weight if you choose carefully.
Satiate your appetite with foods that are better for you
and your diet and try small portions of other foods for
fun. For example, if there is a lean turkey, you have
a great source of protein to fill up with. Then you can
take a small serving of those fattening mashed potatoes
and gravy on the side without piling your plate.

• Many people do
not keep up with their exercise programmes at the time when they
most need it. During the holidays, you can cut your stress levels
while working off those extra calories by sticking to your exercise
regime. It may seem like you don’t have time; but if you
simply commit to this, you will be glad that you did. If you
don’t have the time you usually have, find ways to get
in your exercise in a creative way. For example, you may have
to wrap gifts and so you don’t want to take time to drive
to the gym, get in your work out clothes, exercise, shower,
and drive home. Instead, take a short break from wrapping to
work out to a DVD or walk around the block.
If you use a few weight loss tricks you will look and feel better
throughout the holiday seasons and will suffer fewer regrets
when it is over.
