Sometimes no matter what we do the job in hand seems a little bit too overwhelming, just too damned large to contemplate. It looms over us like an immense shadowy cloud before a storm. It’s so imposing that we try not to think about it, we try and relegate it to the backs of our minds. Now we don’t have to face it or contemplate it. We want to, but no, it’s too big to tackle, the task is too immense, let’s leave it.

But at the same time we have now missed a golden opportunity a chance to change our lives, to make a real difference. If only there was some way of getting help, of harnessing our fear and replacing it with something more constructive.

Before setting out on a large task and losing weight can be a large task whether you are a little overweight or grossly overweight the road ahead can seem incredibly long. First you must have a plan of action. Break the task ahead into smaller doable pieces and set achievable goals.

Look out for times when it is almost customary to eat more than normal and increase any weight loss activity to compensate. So you may not lose any weight that week but you sure as hell aren’t going to gain any either. Now when you are planning your weight loss assault, make absolutely sure that you have all the necessary information at your fingertips. It is absolutely pointless setting off on typical magazine type diet. They are just there to sell magazines. There is nothing about the psychological aspect, what exactly to measure, which foods, which exercises. It is impossible to give a diet that will work in just a few pages. Most of them tend to be menus based on a certain aspect.

No before you set off on a weight loss project find out as much information as you possibly can and then make a plan. The plan doesn’t have to be a definite; if it’s not working alter it, tweak it to suit yourself. Now all of this can still be quite daunting so there are a couple of really good effective methods to help keep you motivated if things are going wrong or the road ahead appears too difficult.

One of the major hurdles in anything can be lack of self belief. If deep down you think that you won’t be able to do it, then you won’t. That doesn’t matter if it’s weight loss, a tough exam, becoming very rich or running a mile. If you can’t convince yourself you can do it then you are definitely doomed. People that do things are no different from you. Flesh, blood, bone. The only thing that they had was self belief.

A strange phenomena is self belief, some people have it in spades some don’t. So how to encourage it, nurture it grow it.

Hypnosis or self hypnosis is a good method. Hypnosis is simply a way to access your deeper thoughts and slowly change them to benefit yourself. By being in hypnotic and receptive state you can in effect reprogram your core beliefs. Often this is referred to as the subconscious mind and this runs along in the background as we continue our everyday lives.


Another very good way of doing this is by carrying out affirmations. Here you decide on a set of mantras or empowering sentences and repeat them assertively to yourself out loud at least once a day, preferably whilst looking in a mirror. In a way you become your very own self belief mentor. Lets take a look at some that may be helpful.

First of all if you have been on a diet before and failed, do not blame yourself, instead blame your lack of knowledge so your first affirmation may be;

“My previous thoughts about losing weight were wrong. I am developing a new way, a successful way.”

Next you may want a bit of encouragement.

“Weight loss is not difficult when you know how. I am on the path to sustained weight loss”

“I am in the process of dropping two dress” or

“I am in the process of tightening my belt by two notches.”

Notice that they are in the present tense as according to psychologists the subconscious works in the present tense.

Some people claim that affirmations work best if they are worded as if you have already achieved your desired goal ; “I have lost twenty four pounds” but that doesn’t quite ring true so an element of doubt is brought in. Perhaps sticking to the first form is better.

Once you have the information to lose weight and are confident in the system then these affirmations can be a huge help in sticking to your task, no matter how large.

Now you have the general idea you can make your own affirmations directly suited to your own situation.
