Abdominal fat has bothered people for years simply because it can be unsightly. However, as science gains an understanding about how the distribution of fat affects overall health, we begin to realize how dangerous it is. For years, doctors have recognized that people who tend to gain weight in their abdominal region are more likely to suffer from diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, and other medical conditions.

There are two types of fat that we will consider. The first is the fat directly under the skin which is called subcutaneous fat. Intra-abdominal fat, or visceral fat, surrounds internal organs and seems to exacerbate or even cause health problems. While no one knows the reason that this fat affects so many areas of health, there are several theories circulating. One theory is based on the idea that the fat cells secrete a substance that inhibits the proper function of the internal organs. Both types of fat can cause medical problems, but the intra-abdominal fat poses a much graver risk.

It is hard to understand how much fat is present because much of it is hidden in the abdomen. CT or MRI scans can give a clear understanding of how much fat is present, but most people do not need expensive and inconvenient testing to understand that they have excess fat in their belly. By simply measuring one’s waist, a person can understand if they have a significant amount of fat that puts them at risk.

The tendency to gain weight in the belly is affected by many factors. Genetics, stress, and sex seem to affect how people store fat. Also, age is an obvious factor in the distribution of fat. Many programmes available currently claim to target weight loss in the abdomen. According to the current research, losing weight and exercising are the simple and most effective solutions for this problem. Exercise alone can make a big difference in losing belly fat. Some studies show that visceral fat is the first fat to go when a regular exercise programme is followed. Unfortunately, doing exercises that are aimed only at the abdominal region are not enough. We may wish that we could do a few sit ups and call it good, but it is important to have a regular exercise programme that is rigorous enough to increase your heart rate, but not too strenuous for your individual fitness level. Strength training is also helpful, as it improves your ability to burn fat throughout the day.

Instead of buying into the hype caused by people who are trying to sell you something, you can take steps today to reduce abdominal fat and improve your health. By starting an exercise programme that works for you and cutting calories with life style changes, instead of fad diets, you can see results that will stay with you. Abdominal fat is an unknown danger causing severe health problems for many people. By taking a little time every day for aerobic activity, you could gain years of your life down the road.

Feel Great by Losing Weight comment:

Abdominal fat can be a good indicator of future health risks, and as the article points out it is not something that you want. Despite what you may think, you cannot target fat deposits. In other words if you have flabby arms doing arm exercises will not get rid of it for you. Similarly abdominal exercises will not target abdominal fat. What you need is an integrated approach to solve your problem. To lose it quickly and safely, whilst at the same time massively improving your general health perhaps we can help.
