Have you ever sabotaged your own weight loss while eating out without even knowing it? It is easy to lose track of the amount of fat and calories you consume when eating out. This can be very difficult to deal with if your lifestyle includes eating at restaurants often. The good news is that you can eat out without gaining weight.

The trick to eating out is similar to the trick to shopping well in the grocery store. Many people believe that losing weight starts when they choose what foods to pick up and put in their mouths, but the real time of reckoning comes when a person chooses what food to purchase, whether at the store or at a restaurant. Of course, there are some times when you eat at a friend’s house or at a party. But, let’s face it, most people provide themselves with their own food. Unless you rely on your friends or the kindness of strangers for your daily bread, you make the choice just before you pay for your food. Therefore, it is important to think about what you are purchasing. When you buy a large item, such as a car, you will consider the various attributes before making a purchase. The same principle applies to buying food. Even if the individual items cost much less than an entire car, the cost of all of your food from restaurants and grocery stores adds up to a large chunk of your income. Not only that, but your life expectancy and appearance are related to the choices you make. Take the same time you would to decide about a large purchase like a house, flat, or vehicle to decide on what you buy to put into your own body.

At a restaurant, you must have a general idea before starting that you are going to look for the foods that will make you look, feel, and live better. This is made very easy in restaurants that put a symbol on the menu next to the items that are ‘low fat’ or ‘heart healthy’. Some restaurants give this information for the convenience of their patrons. Sometimes the best items on the menu are marked by a ‘low calorie’ icon because the entrees are made with simple ingredients with high quality. For example, one of the best tasting foods on one menu was on the ‘heart healthy’ list because it was made with fresh, healthy ingredients. The shrimp pasta with a flavorful marinara sauce and fresh vegetables was filling, heart healthy and could be ordered with whole grain pasta that added another succulent layer of texture and flavor to the dish. This was one of the best dishes on the menu and it was very tasty.

If you enjoy a restaurant that does not specify the foods that are good for you, you must use common sense. For example, you can ask for salad dressing ‘on the side’ when ordering a salad. Some salad dressings can make a salad as fattening as another dish with the amount of calories and fat in the dressing. Croutons and bits of fatty meat may help a salad taste a little bit better, but it may take the calories and fat to a level similar to that of a higher calorie dish. Also, if you are in the mood for a hot dish, you do not need to resort to a salad. A well made salmon or tilapia dish may fill you up and give you more flavor than a salad. If you have questions about how a dish is made, do not be afraid to ask the waiter or waitress and find out what your options are. While some chefs may be sensitive to any alterations of their menu, most understand the necessary dietary constraints that people are under and will accommodate them to the best of their ability. Also, having sauces served on the side can give you more control over the amount of added calories in a dish.

Whether you are eating ‘fast food’ or at a ‘sit down’ restaurant, it is important to use common sense and choose foods that fit into your daily plan. Fast foods provide labeling that can help make decisions. Other restaurants can provide steamed vegetables and broiled meats that will help you stay on track without sacrificing a full stomach and good taste. Losing weight may be a bit more difficult when eating out, but once you learn the tricks, you will be thrilled with the results.
