For one reason or another, people make resolutions to lose weight. Sometimes the New Year can evoke motivation for weight loss. At other times, a person may resolve to lose weight in preparation for a vacation or a school reunion. Unfortunately, many resolutions fall by the wayside.

How can we make changes that stick? Perhaps the biggest change is looking at weight loss as a lifestyle, rather than a diet. To lose weight and keep it off, a ‘wrap around’ approach is more likely to succeed than a single effort. If you try to lose weight by simply setting up an eating plan, you may be ignoring some of the biggest stumbling blocks that will sabotage your weight loss efforts.

I do not mean to underestimate the importance of choosing an eating plan that will take off the pounds. This is a basic that must be addressed. When you go to the grocery store, you take the first step in losing weight. Do not buy those special treats with the idea that you will have them for a special occasion. Wait until your new eating habits are established before you tempt yourself with favorite goodies. I can now keep a ‘stash’ of chocolate in a drawer and take out a piece now and then. When your body is still getting used to new eating patterns, this may not be an option.

Build a support network. Some diet plans come with a support network and coaching. For example, Weight Watchers has a programme with peer support as an integral part. If you are not part of a weight loss programme with support networking, consider building your own network with friends or family. Find other like minded people who are willing to offer you the strength to stick with your plan. Also, let’s face it. It is easier to skip out on a goal when no one else knows about it. Motivation is easier to maintain when other people are holding you accountable and praising your achievements.

Exercise! By moving your body, you will increase your metabolism and give yourself a fighting chance to lose weight. Park a little further from the store entrance and take the stairs. Every time you move your body, you give it a little boost. Get your endorphins going to help you feel better. By loving your body enough to get it moving, you will develop a better relationship with it. You can gain a respect for your body instead of despising it for its size. You and your body can move together and lose weight.

Address personal issues:
Some people address stress with food. Some people use food for comfort. Comfort food is probably one of the main reasons people do not keep weight off. Recognize when and why you turn to food and find new ways to approach your problems. I’m sure you will find something much better to do with your feelings than eat.

Finally, give yourself a break. Don’t be too hard on yourself. We often make life harder than we have to. If you mess up your diet for a day, or a week, or even a month; get back in gear and choose to try again. This is a marathon race and not a sprint. How can you lose weight if you are hard on yourself? Remember that you are a terrific person at any weight and that your weight loss is for you and you alone. Respect yourself and your body enough to forgive mistakes and move forward. That is the only way to lose weight and keep it off.
