By understanding the mechanisms
of blood sugar levels, you will gain a tool that will
help you in your quest for weight loss. We have a basic
understanding of the importance of eating properly to
maintain blood sugar levels because of the teachings of
our parents, grandparents, and great grandparents. For
example, the phrase, ‘How can you have any pudding
if you don’t eat your meat?’ is based on the
common sense that the pudding will elevate blood sugar
levels more precipitously without the intake of a protein.
Even though I am being a bit ‘tongue and cheek’
with my example, it is true that generations of people
have figured out that maintaining proper blood sugar levels
is important.
Many people who are overweight develop type-two diabetes.
This disease used to known as a disease in older people,
but it is reaching people at younger ages as the population
becomes heavier. Additional weight puts further strain
on the pancreas, which may already be at risk for developing
diabetes. When the pancreas malfunctions, it is not able
to release insulin as needed to regulate blood sugar levels.
A way to describe one type of pancreatic malfunction is
to think of it as ‘spurting’. When blood sugar
levels are quickly elevated, the pancreas tries to release
insulin. It may not be able to do this successfully. The
blood sugar levels can increase dangerously. Then, the
insulin may ‘spurt’ out, causing blood sugar
levels to drop dangerously low. This is a very casual
explanation, but it may give you an idea of the strain
that is imposed on the pancreas and the body in general.
By eating foods that are rich in complex carbohydrates
and paired with a protein, you will decrease the strain
to your body and increase your body’s ability to
regulate it.
Have you ever noticed that a doughnut for breakfast will
have you digging through your desk or cupboards for a
snack a couple of hours later, while an egg on whole wheat
toast will keep you satiated for a longer time? You body
chemistry responds by elevating your blood sugars and
then dropping you after consuming refined flour and sugar.
By filling up with fiber, protein, and complex carbohydrates,
you will keep your levels even and increase your overall
energy. That is why energy drinks can leave you with less
energy than you started with. If the energy drink is based
on sugar and caffeine, it will leave you flat once you
metabolize those ingredients.

Think of your body as
a machine. You wouldn’t buy an expensive car and pour
kerosene in the tank. Your body has a more complicated chemical
mechanism than a car does. Eating properly will increase your
performance and energy efficiency. Stay tuned up, get your oil
changed regularly, and you will prolong the life of your machine
while increasing its function. Your body is a complex organism
with great ability. Let it live up to its potential.
