How many times do we start an
exercise programme, only to lose interest and revert to
sedentary habits? Exercise can become boring or simply
fail to fit into a person’s life style for a period
of time. This is when it is important to have an exercise
‘back up plan’.
Many people enjoy working out at a gym, but in the spring
time they may not like the idea of being indoors for that
period of time. Rather than sit in a lawn chair outside,
consider putting on your walking shoes and go for a walk
at the nearest park or around your neighborhood. If you
are in a social mood, try to get up a game of football
or tennis to get exercise.
Another time when the gym might not work for you is when
you are house bound for any reason. If you have a child
who is home with the sniffles, you may have the time to
exercise, but not the freedom to go out. Also, if you
live in a climate where the weather makes travel difficult
on some days, you may want to devise a way to exercise
in your own home. Many people have exercise equipment,
but it is not completely necessary. You can do calisthenics,
dance, or work out to a DVD.
Travel can ruin an exercise programme quickly. If your typical
exercises are not available to you when you travel, try
to walk or pick up another way to keep your body moving.
By keeping up your health programme, your travels will overall
be more enjoyable.
There are many reasons to mix up your work out routine.
Not only will it keep you interested in what you are doing
and accommodate the needs of your current life style,
but it will work more areas of your body and increase
your metabolism. When a person chooses to exercise by
walking, they may not be able to target specific areas
of the body, such as an exercise DVD will. A person who
limits their exercise to calisthenics will not gain the
benefits of cardiovascular exercise. Your body can get
‘used’ to an exercise routine. Shake things
up by mixing up your work outs to keep your mind and body
active.
Make sure that you do exercise that increases your heart
rate and breathing. However, work out at a pace that allows
you to carry on a conversation. This type of exercise
will increase your metabolism and help you to lose weight.
If you have problems with your joints or other physical
constraints, consider a work out plan in water. There
are ways to move your body and strengthen your heart in
spite of age or physical difficulties. If you have a chronic
condition or are at risk for physical problems, check
with your doctor before beginning any exercise programme.
