Pregnancy is hard on one’s
body. A fit pregnancy can lower the risk of gaining too
much weight. There is no way around the effects of pregnancy
on a woman’s figure, but you can gain the appropriate
amount of weight by eating properly and exercising safely.
Many people feel that pregnancy is an excuse to eat as
much as they like, and it is true that your appetite may
increase during pregnancy. However, for the health of
yourself and your baby, a balanced diet with portion control
can prevent many complications and make it easier to regain
your figure after delivery. Weight gain is to be expected,
but can also be controlled to a certain extent.
Many changes in your diet are called for when pregnant.
The initial shock comes when you are required to give
up things like alcohol. Many people decrease the amount
of artificial sweeteners and foods processed chemically
to be on the safe side. If you were a smoker, the sudden
elimination of nicotine may put you at higher risk of
gaining too much weight. This sudden shift away from items
you usually find in your diet can turn your eyes toward
substitutes. One woman gave up alcohol and turned directly
to chocolate and other candies. She gained a lot of weight
very quickly.
Cravings can also affect many women. If you crave sweets,
you may try to substitute sweet fruits like grapes or
berries. If you crave salty snacks, consider cutting thin
strips of crisp cucumber and salting them lightly, or
making a batch of popcorn and limiting the butter. Both
of these options provide fiber and will fill you up much
better than a bag of crisps. If you want ice cream, you
might try frozen yogurt. I love frozen grapes. The flavor
is intense and the texture is delightful.
Even though you do not need to double your consumption,
you do need to eat for two. What you eat may make a difference
in your baby’s development. Do not worry so much
about weight gain that you deny your baby nutrients it
needs. Make sure that your diet is full of lean protein,
calcium filled foods, and fruits and vegetables. When
in doubt, eat produce with many different colors. Varying
colors indicate a varying range of nutritional offerings.
Try to eat complex carbohydrates to fill you up and provide
you with the fiber that will help deter some of the uncomfortable
digestive side effects of pregnancy.
After delivery, remember that your body needs time to
regain its shape and your nutritional needs are still
very important, especially if you plan to breast feed
your baby. Pregnancy is a great time to establish healthy
eating patterns that will not only give you a fit pregnancy,
but improve your quality of life for years to come.
