Now that is an interesting question.
But wouldn’t it be wonderful if it could? You could
waddle into the hypnotists practice, submit to his or
her magical influence and hey presto six months later,
like a butterfly emerging from a chrysalis possess the
body of your dreams. And if you can’t make it to
a hypnotist there are hundreds of pre –recorded
tapes and cds or even mp3 downloads to help you achieve
this. But before you rush off to purchase said tapes lets
take a closer look at hypnosis.
Hypnosis as everybody knows is a way of accessing your
subconscious mind and influencing it to carry out the
task you have set yourself. For example losing the fear
of heights, losing the fear of public speaking or quitting
nail biting.
Now for most people the nearest they have been to a hypnotist
is watching a show on television where people are put
in a hypnotic state so that they can then amuse us with
their antics. And very amusing a lot of it can be.
But there is more to hypnosis than this. It has been well
documented that people have been hypnotised or have learned
to hypnotise themselves so that they can have minor or
even major surgery without anaesthetic, and not feel any
pain what so ever, which is absolutely amazing really.
And hypnosis or self-hypnosis is a skill that anybody
can develop, some easier than others. People that can
hypnotise themselves to avoid pain are not superhuman;
they have just taken the time to learn the skill of hypnotism.
Just like riding a bike, some pick it up easily, some
find it harder, but sooner or later the skill is acquired
by everyone. So if we accept the fact that hypnotism can
enable us to do incredible things then surely it is the
dream ticket to effortless weight loss. Well yes; and
then again no.
On its own it will inevitably fail. For example if you
want to learn to be a pilot. A couple of sessions of hypnosis
are not going to do it for you. If you learn how to be
a pilot then it may make you a much better pilot, but
if your subconscious mind has nothing to work on then
how can it possibly achieve it?
Let’s look at hypnosis and giving up smoking. Again
there is quite a high success rate because you either
smoke or you don’t. There is no fantastic skill
involved in not smoking. So it must work for weight loss.
Well the answer to that is yes it can be a big help once
you have learned how to successfully lose weight. But
if not it can often set dieters up for rebound phenomena,
where bizarrely they actually end up heavier than before.
This by the way is where most dieters end up.
Simply hypnotising yourself to cut down on food or exercising
more will more often than not result in glorious failure;
because losing weight especially as we get older isn’t
quite that simple. Cut down on which foods, in what proportion?
Which exercises and how often if at all? Which foods to
increase, which hormones to control?
